Cape Cod based artist, Lydia Broderick, brings her unique blend of contrasting colors, mixed media and abstract realism to the paintings she creates. She combines acrylics, spray paint, oils, and various other mediums to create a vast array of original unique canvases. Because of a fascination with what makes up the human experience, Lydia focuses primarily on portraits of people from her own perspective. Often using unusual combinations of color and products, she manages to achieve pleasing and intriguing paintings.
Primarily self-taught, Lydia has honed her skills since childhood drawing and creating. As a “quirky loner”, she enjoys painting while listening to music or books. Recently, while working on what she calls “The Musician Series”, she listened to the music and life stories of each individual musician (i.e., Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, etc.) as she created their images on the canvas. Her portraits are immediately recognizable, and the observer often feels the subjects are looking right back at them. This may be a result of her empathizing with them as she learns about their lives.
Lydia’s artwork now appears in homes and studios from Miami and Puerto Rico to California and New England. She has been commissioned to paint her creations for restaurants and individuals and has successfully grown a following and clientele who now own many of her originals.
