Cate Becker

Cate’s work focuses on multimedia contemporary figurative painting, and abstract urban, and farm and coastal landscapes. She experiments with contrasting the natural/industrial, the organization of perspective/form, and the elapsing/ebbing of time. While expressionistic, Cate fashions figurative subjects which hang onto line and shape, pulling out the essential color and energy of the subject.

Growing up outside Boston, the summers Cate spent in Dartmouth throughout her life have afforded her the generative artistic sway of the South Coast. Cate holds a Masters in Art History (German Expressionism) from the University of Chicago after matriculating from the joint program of BA in Art History at Tufts / Fine Art at the SMFA, Boston. Interestingly, a love of anatomy/physiology led her to subsequently complete a PostBacc certificate in premed at Columbia University. Although she did not pursue a career in medicine, those studies inform her artistic work, particularly in finding the underlying current of space, forces, and optics beneath the tangible, visible world through paint.

After living and working in galleries in Boston, Chicago, and New York, Cate settled on the South Coast to recenter her focus on painting. Cate has been a member of the South Coast Artists for over two years and is a recent member of Gallery X, New Bedford. For the past several years, Cate’s work has been shown in multiple group and juried exhibitions all over Rhode Island, Martha’s Vineyard, and coastal Massachusetts.
